Isle of Lewis Chess Set – High-Resolution 3D Printed Legends
Step aside, mass-produced pawns—this is chess with a saga.
Our Isle of Lewis chess set is a lovingly recreated, high-resolution 3D print of the iconic 12th-century pieces discovered on a windswept beach in Scotland. The originals, carved from walrus ivory and dating back to the Viking Age, are now split between the British Museum and the National Museum of Scotland—but we think your living room shelf is just as worthy.
Each piece is printed in fine detail to honor the expressive style of the originals: brooding kings, concerned queens, cross-legged bishops, and—of course—the famous shield-biting rooks (believed to represent Norse berserkers mid-freakout).
Fun facts to impress your friends:
The full hoard included 93 pieces—enough for four full chess sets. Ours is slightly less beach-hoard, more shelf-ready.
Historians think the pieces may have originated from Trondheim, Norway. The game: still solid. The drama: still real.
No walruses were harmed in the making of these. Just a few spools of premium filament and some caffeine-fueled design hours.
Whether you’re displaying them, playing with them, or using the berserker as an emotional support piece (hey, no judgment), this set is a tribute to craftsmanship—both ancient and modern.
